Our 5K is returning in person October 2nd at Alameda Park in Butler PA. We will meet at the Carousel Shelter in the lower part of the park.

MISSY BARTO'S STORY:
For those who have supported VOICe for any length of time, Missy (Melissa) Barto is a name you've likely heard. This 26-year-old woman was a native of Butler in every sense. The 2009 graduate from Butler Area Senior High School worked as a store manager for Miller's Meats - a local landmark on Main Street - and was known as an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. She was mother to a 6-year-old girl; she was a sister, daughter, and friend. |

Before June 8, 2017, Missy was also alive.
But that Thursday, she got in the car of someone she loved, someone she trusted. Her boyfriend, Ishemer Ramsey, a 21-year-old from
Lyndora, was waiting for her.
Ramsey, suspecting that his girlfriend was cheating on him, shot her three times. He then drove to a remote farm in Lawrence County
and burned her body.
Here in Western Pennsylvania - a perfect blend of urban, rural, and affluent communities juxtaposed together; we may not expect to see stories like these erupting from our own backyards. However, reality shows that intimate partner violence occurs far more frequently than we may realize and in places we may not suspect.
“We want so often to teach about ‘stranger danger’, but 93% of the time, an abuser is someone both known and trusted," said Courtney
Riffer, VOICe Director of Prevention and Outreach.
On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million survivors and victims. This number does not even begin to take into account other forms of abuse such as emotional, verbal, psychological, spiritual, etc. that are perpetrated by spouses or intimate partners.
But Missy Barto isn't a statistic, and as a community celebrating her life and impact, we realize that her legacy allows us to reach others with help and resources.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to share her story. One of the primary ways we accomplish this is through the #GetNeby 5K, which we have co-hosted with the Barto family for the last six years. #GetNebby 5K inspires its participants to become intrusively inquisitive and viciously wakened to the realities of domestic violence, particularly perpetrated at the hands of an intimate partner.
